Tenryu-ji

The Sogenchi pond garden was laid out by Muso Soseki, the temple's founding abbot, in the 1340s, and its shape — the pond, the rock arrangement at the far shore, the borrowed view of the Arashiyama hills rising behind it — has come down unaltered. The buildings around it have burned eight times; the garden has not moved. It was designated Japan's first Special Place of Scenic Beauty for exactly that reason.

The technique to look for is shakkei, borrowed scenery: the composition does not stop at the temple wall but takes in Mount Arashiyama and Mount Kameyama as part of the design, so the garden is much larger than the land it occupies. Stand on the veranda of the Ohojo and the hills are doing the work of a back wall.

What the extra $1.88 (¥300) buys

The halls ticket adds the Ohojo — the abbot's quarters, with a vast painted dragon on the sliding screens — the Shoin and the Tahoden, a hall built in the form of an imperial villa. You walk them in socks on polished floors, and the point of the higher ticket is the veranda: sitting on the boards with the garden in front of you is a different experience from walking its perimeter.

The Cloud Dragon ceiling

The Dharma Hall ceiling carries a dragon in ink painted by Matazo Kayama in 1997 for the temple's 650th anniversary, eight metres across, with eyes that follow you around the room from any angle. It costs $3.13 (¥500) at its own reception on the west side of the hall, and outside the spring and autumn seasons it opens only at weekends and on public holidays. It is closed on 28 and 29 October, until about 12:45 on 30 October, and on 2 January 2027.

Shigetsu, in the temple precinct, serves shojin ryori — the Buddhist temple cuisine that is genuinely vegan by construction rather than by adaptation: no meat, no fish, no dashi made from bonito, and traditionally no onion or garlic either. Set courses are served in a tatami room looking onto the garden, and reservations are advised rather than required. For anyone travelling on a plant-based diet in Japan, this is one of the few places where the kitchen does not need to be negotiated with — more on eating without dashi.

A temple entry ticket is needed to reach the restaurant, since it stands inside the paid area.

Access details below are the temple's own, read on 30 August 2026, with the walking times measured by us from each station gate. Three railways serve Arashiyama and they arrive in three different places, so the line you pick decides whether you reach the temple in five minutes or fifteen.

The north gate is the detail worth knowing: it opens directly onto the bamboo path. Buy the garden ticket at the front, walk the pond, and leave through the north gate into the grove — which saves a loop back through the crowd at the main entrance and puts you in the bamboo from the quiet end.

The sequence that works in Arashiyama is bamboo first at about 07:30, then Tenryu-ji at 08:30 when it opens, then the bridge and the river. The temple absorbs the hour when the grove becomes unbearable, which is the practical argument for buying the ticket even if gardens are not your thing.

On the November early-opening dates the order reverses: the garden at 07:30, the bamboo at 08:30, and you are ahead of the day either way. The two-day itinerary uses the standard version.
